SPECIAL CLASSES FOR PARENTS OF OLDER CHILDREN
Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (for parents of K-5 grade students)
Fee: $30 (includes book); spouse is free
Parents are invited to attend this popular course based on the book Parenting Young Children by Don Dinkmeyer and Gary McKay. Topics include Understanding your Child's Behavior, Building Self-Esteem, Communicating with Young Chidren, Learning Cooperation and Effective Discipline. This series of six evenings will be held at local elementary schools (sites to be announced). Instructor Nancy Diamant is an experienced elementary teacher and child development specialist.

Active Parenting of Teens (for parents of 5th - 8th grade students)
Fee: $30 (includes book); spouse is free
This nationally-recognized program of instruction in parenting skills was developed by Michael H. Popkin, Ph.D. Six seminars cover topics of concern to parents such as developing self-esteem and responsibility, communicating effectively, preventing alcohol and drug abuse and dealing with sexuality. Class activites include "APT" videos, discussions and workbook activities. This series will be held at local middle schools in Westminster, Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley during the school year. Instructor Rick Perruccio is an experienced middle school counselor, father and parent educator.

The Challenging High School Years

Take this series of six evening sessions to help you free yourself from that nagging self-doubt that so many caring parents feel about parenting their high school teens. Discover simple and effective strategies to help you establish and maintain a healthier relationship with your adolescent son or daughter. Learn to take affirmative action in setting and enforcing limits for behavior that are appropriate to this age group, how to better communicate with your son or daughter, how to manage your own frustration and anger and how to achieve increased peace in the family. An additional evening will be optional and focus on families in crises and applying the skills learned. You will receive valuable information to do what you need to do as soon as possible to turn a difficult family situation into a new beginning. Instructor Tim Baker, MA has over 15 years of teaching and counseling experience with students and families and is specially trained in reality therapy and choice theory to use proactive strategies that are effective with this age group.
